I got a data breach letter. What do I do?

First, don't panic. But...don't ignore it either.

Here are the four steps I'd take:

1️⃣ Sign up for the free monitoring the company is offering. They caused the problem, so take advantage of the protection they're providing. Just make sure the monitoring service is legitimate before signing up. If you're not sure, ask a trusted friend or family member to help you research it.

2️⃣ Freeze your credit with all three bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. It's free, and you can temporarily unfreeze it anytime you're applying for a loan or a new credit card.

3️⃣ Check your credit report regularly. Freezing your credit helps stop new accounts from being opened, but it's still worth checking to make sure nothing slipped through before the freeze was in place.

4️⃣ Turn on two-factor authentication for your important accounts. That extra notification makes a big difference and will give you some more comfort and control.

None of this takes very long, and the 3 credit bureaus have actually made it pretty easy to set up and monitor.  So take advantage of it.

If you've received one of these letters and aren't sure what to do next, we're happy to help.
