Should I charge my adult kid rent if they move back home?

Not necessarily. But you do need a plan and clear expectations.

👉 How long is the plan to be home?

👉 What costs are you willing to cover?

👉 How much can you actually afford to help without changing your own retirement?

For many families, charging rent absolutely makes sense. For others, maybe your kid helps with groceries or takes over more of the household expenses like the internet or streaming services. And sometimes charging them nothing is the right answer.

A year without rent might give them a chance to pay off debt, build up savings, save for a house, or get back on their feet after a tough stretch.

If you can afford to do that, that’s amazing.

Just make sure they understand the value of the opportunity they’re being given. And make sure you aren't ignoring what your help is actually costing you in the long run.

You’ll want to guard against:

🚫Starting to save less.

🚫Pulling more from your portfolio.

🚫Or putting off something you planned to do in retirement.

None of those decisions feels like a big deal on its own.

But without a timeline, a budget, and some idea of what everyone is working toward, a temporary arrangement can start to drift.

Remember, sometimes the best thing you can do isn't to remove every financial pressure from your kid's life.I

t's to give them enough help to move forward while still expecting them to take some responsibility for getting there. If you're navigating this right now, we can help you run the numbers, frame the right conversation, and figure out what makes sense for both generations.
