3 IRS scams to watch for this tax season

Americans lost $12.5 BILLION to fraud last year and retirees are targeted the most.

And tax season has the scammers working overtime impersonating the IRS through fake phone calls, emails, and texts.

Last week someone on our team received two of these calls.

And AI is making this all seem more and more realistic.

💡 Here’s some tips to avoid getting caught in one of these scams:

1️⃣Scam 1: The “Pay Us Right Now” phone call saying pay us now or you’re in big trouble

• The IRS does not do urgency!

• They don’t demand immediate payment

• They don’t threaten arrest over the phone

⚠ If you get a phone call saying they are from the IRS, just hang up.

2️⃣Scam 2: Official looking emails and texts

• They certainly can look legit – logos, formatting

• Subject lines could read “Immediate Action Required” or “Your Refund is Ready”

• BUT – the IRS won’t starts these conversations by email, text or one your social media

⚠ If you get a communication like this – Don’t Click, Don’t Reply, Don’t Forward – just Delete

3️⃣Scam 3: The “Huge Refund” tax preparer calling to say they can save you thousands with a big refund

⚠ Delete or Hang Up – and definitely don’t engage on social media

These are just a couple examples.

Almost every major scam today follows the same 3 ingredients:

1. Urgency - “Act now or something bad will happen.”

2. High-pressure tactics - “Don’t hang up. Don’t tell anyone. Handle this immediately.”

3. Someone out of the blue asking for money or personal information

Once you hear those things?

🚫Red flag.

Do not respond.

✅And then Pause and Verify.

Assume it’s a scam until you can verify otherwise with a trusted family member or advisor.

And if you're a client, call us before you take any action or share any information.
